Bio

The Hot Club of Baltimore performs inspired arrangements from the original repertoire of guitarist Django Reinhardt of the 1930's & 40's.

Django Reinhardt changed the way guitar would be played forever by combining the rich repertoire of the European gypsy with early American Jazz. Not only did Django display an awesome technique and virtuosity, he played very melodically, always keeping the tune in mind at every turn. Django used augmented and diminished patterns in new ways with a complexity and whimsical sound that would later be akin to the Be-Bop of Diz and Bird. Django used acoustic guitar almost exclusively, but began using light amplification in his later years and even played a Gibson arch top during his time with Ellington as a nod to American Jazz guitarist Charlie Christian.

The Hot Club of Baltimore, led by guitarist Michael Joseph Harris includes guitarist Sami Arefin, bassist Eddie Hrybyk, pianist Cesar Orozco, Seth Kibel or John Dierker on clarinet, Joseph Brotherton or Dave Ballou on trumpet, Mike Kuhl on drums, and various guest artists including Matt Henry & Nicole Saphos on vocals.

The Hot Club will be recording their first album this year. You can find Hot Club performing swing dances in Baltimore at Mobtown Ballroom throughout the year as well as listening performances at An Die Musik and other concert halls.
