Bio

Jonathan Decker is a Greenville native and Clemson graduate with a degree in Engineering. He was first introduced to jazz at an early age by his father Pete Decker, a prominent Greenville jazz bassist. From his father he was influenced to the more modern styles of Bebop to Miles Davis. They played often together before he passed away in 2011. He was trained in piano between the ages of 7-13 by his grandfather, a professional classical and jazz pianist who was a professor of music at Gardner Webb college. From a young age Jonathan showed promise in his ability to improvise, write music, and write unique arrangements to existing songs. His grandfather introduced him to classic jazz including the likes of Cole Porter and Rogers and Hart. Jonathan explored the genre on his own and particularly focused on Duke Ellington, Gershwin, and Irving Berlin. Jonathan developed his playing style by imitating his grandfather.

Since his grandfather was a product of the 30s and 40s swing era, Jonathan style is reminiscent of the period. Jonathan also plays jazz and blues on guitar and writes music. He played live in college at business functions, festivals, restaurants, and parties. He has also performed solo at weddings and services. He lives with his wife and 4 children in Mauldin, SC.
