Bio
The Eric Tyus Sound is heavily rooted in the Smooth Jazz idiom with elements from R&B, Funk, and Gospel. A native of Spartanburg, SC, he has been a professional guitarist and flutist for over 20 years. A performer, mentor, and family man, Eric's musical career is supported by his lovely wife Barbara and their beautiful daughter Erica.
Eric’s passion for performing is the result of a lifetime of musical influence. From watching his mother play the piano at church on Sunday mornings to listening to Classical Jazz with his father on the weekends, Eric was always surrounded by different forms of music. Growing up in a home filled with music it wasn’t long before Eric picked up his first guitar and began developing his sound.
After realizing that music was his calling, Eric obtained his Bachelors of Science Degree in Music from South Carolina State University. While obtaining his degree, he played the flute in the world renowned Marching 101 Band and guitar on the all progressive and popular SCSU Bull Dogs Jazz Band. He also became a member of the one and only prestigious Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity.
Over the years Eric has performed with warm up bands and personally with notable Jazz, R & B, and Gospel artist such as: The Late Greats Dizzy Gillespie and Clark Terry, Fred Wesley, Frank Foster, SOS Band, The Ohio Players, Midnight Star, Tony! Toni! Tone!, Ginuwine, Dwayne Woods, and Coco McMillian to name a few. Most recently he has performed regularly in club venues with the Smooth Jazz bands E T&D, and PRIDE.
Eric's sound is a one that marvels and surprises those who experience his music. His performances are both outstanding and astonishing, and will undoubtedly keep you out of your seat and on your feet dancing.
Eric’s most recent project is titled “Stop On By.” This a smooth jazz remake of the Bobby Womack R&B classic that has already garnered buzz around the music industry. With this new release and along with Eric’s touring schedule, he is finding himself more in demand than ever in venues across the country. The music industry is building a continued interest and appreciation for his sound and talent, and his loyal fan base is spreading far and wide across this nation and abroad while smooth jazz enthusiast await eagerly for their first chance to experience The Eric Tyus Sound live!
